EE aiming for total UK 4G coverage by 2020

EE has announced plans to ensure near-total UK 4G coverage by 2020.

The UK’s biggest mobile network (for now at least) recently revealed a series of measures to bolster its dominant position and boost its customer experience.

One of those measures will be to expand the network’s 4G coverage of the country to 95 percent of the UK landmass within the next three-and-a-half years.

It’s worth distinguishing between landmass and population here. While EE currently covers only 60 percent of the UK’s geography, this actually incorporates 95 percent of the UK population. By expanding the land coverage figure to 95 percent, it will mean that 99.8 percent of the UK population can access 4G. That’s pretty much total.

Besides bringing 4G to new rural areas, this will also involve EE filling in so-called “notspots” in areas that are ostensibly covered. In order to achieve all of this, EE is building more than 750 new sites around the country.

Another one of EE’s announced boosts will be to bring its entire customer services operation within the UK and Ireland by the end of 2016. This will involve the “onshoring” of 600 jobs.

EE CEO Marc Allera said that these measures were all part of “an ambition to go further than any operator has ever gone, and with the ultimate aim of covering the whole UK with 4G.”
