edgeBlur [surf]ACE’s Us Again

Three new models reduce the cost of getting your hands on a beautifully crafted laptop rest.

Do you remember edgeBlur, maker’s of the strange, but really rather cool surfACE laptop rest which I reviewed with high praise earlier in the year? Well, as Jimmy Cricket used to say: “There’s More.”

Available immediately are four new models, the surfACE 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 which join the original, now named the 1.5, (which I still use everyday). They all protect delicate thighs from the painful heat of overworked laptops, while at the same time improving posture. Yet, as the coding suggests, they manage to cut back on the prohibitive cost.

Primarily this has been done by reducing the number of holes in the surfACE 1.5 from 37 to six in the 1.4 and just four in both the 1.3 and 1.2. The result is a drop from the 1.5’s scary $149 sticker to a more reasonable $99 for the entry level 1.2.

Reducing the number of holes? Why does that matter? Whatever are you going on about? Well, as I explained at great length in my origincal review, the columns that make up the surfACE’s legs and prop up the back of a laptop are made out of high quality drilled aluminium cylinders. These can be screwed together to increase length or taken out to reduce it and the more holes you have in the surfACE, the more customisable it is into alternative layouts (look below for an example). The 1.5 can even be used with any standard camera tripod to create a mobile workstation.

Yet, I have to say, during my time with my surfACE I’ve never really moved far from the basic layout, so those looking to save a few quid would be wise to choose a lower model. I do warn you, however, that the 1.2 edition only comes with 16 aluminium cylinders (the 1.3 has 28 and the 1.4 and 1.5 each have 30) so if your legs look like they should belong to a shot putter you may not be able to heighten the surfACE enough to get the required clearance. You may also have noticed, the 1.3 and 1.2 also don’t allow the back of the laptop to be raised.

Still, budget is all about cutting costs and we’ve had plenty of enquiries about the surfACE with many citing price as their main concern. Well folks, time to look again…
