Echostar Launches “World’s Slimmest” Freeview PVR

The Echostar HDT-610R has been unveiled. It doesn’t have a catchy name, but it does have a catchy tagline. It claims to the slimmest digital TV recorder in the world.

Just 14mm thick, the Echostar HDT-610R is only about as chunky as a tablet or smartphone, letting it piggy-back on top of other components in a TV stand or rack. It’s a powerful device, though. It packs a 500GB hard drive to store recordings from its dual Freeview HD tuners. That’s enough room for 300 hours of SD programmes, or 125 in HD.Echostar

It also offers some connected features, with BBC iPlayer and Box Office 365 built-in. You’ll need to connect the Echostar HDT-610R to your router with a cable though, because there’s no Wi-Fi here. The software packs an 8-day EPG, and Echostar promises new features in upcoming software updates. Fingers crossed that’ll include Netflix and LoveFilm streaming.

From the site it looks a bit like a laptop that’s had its lid ripped off…

Hardly surprising given its dimensions, the Echostar HDT-610R boots out old connections like SCART, packing an HDMI port to connect to a TV, as well as an optical audio out should you want to connect directly to an amplifier. Two USB 2.0 sockets are on its back, presumably used to update its software – we’re checking whether you can play media or archive recordings at the moment.

The Echostar HDT-610R will be available to pre-order from tomorrow, May 4, price to be confirmed.
