E3: Sony Unveils PSP 2

More of a PSP v1.1 if you ask me...

Companies never fail to look incredulous when we continue to write stories about projects they deny exist. Why do we do it then? Because they all lie through their teeth…

Since publishing three stories discussing the likelihood of a revised PSP we’ve heard three denials from Sony. The last of these stories was nine days ago, today Sony has magically unveiled the PSP 2.

19 per cent slimmer (18mm v 23mm) than its predecessor and one third lighter (189g v 280g), the ‘enhanced’ (Sony’s words) PSP (product code: ‘PSP-S150’) is not quite the upgrade we were all hoping for. Sure it has reduced load times and longer battery life (both unspecified) but the 4.3in screen hasn’t been given the LED backlight makeover we were all hoping for, the nightmarish UMD drive remains and there’s no onboard flash memory (though we do get a 1GB Memory Stick bundled… ”ooooh”).

Furthermore there’s no sign of the rumoured camera and while it will be available in black, white and silver along with a limited edition Star Wars Battlefront edition nothing has been done to toughen up the exterior or make it less prone to smudges. On the plus side there is a video output so it can be hooked up to a TV.

Additional crumbs of comfort come from an imminent September release date and a reduced $199 (£100) RRP. Still, feels like a missed opportunity to me…
