Dungeon Siege II Preview

The sequal to Dungeon Seige is looking good - Lars is counting down the days to release!

Other new inclusions are powers and a skill tree. I don’t want do divulge too much information before the review, but there are some really powerful new spells in Dungeon Siege II. The AI has also been vastly improved upon and your enemies are far more intelligent than in the original. Fighting enemies is more involving now as well, something that a lot of players of the original game wanted.

The quests have also been given an overhaul. The primary quests are free from puzzles which is a blessing as I have been put off several games in the past due to the tedious quests. However, the secondary quests – which will give you extra experience and better kit – involve puzzle solving and using your brain.

NPC (none player character) interaction has had a refresh and you now have multiple choice answers. Another improvement is that the main NPCs now speak and Gas Powered Games has spent a lot of time on this feature. In game video now takes advantage of the game engine, so rather than having to wait for a cut scene to load, the videos are real time.

For those that enjoyed the multi player aspects of the original game the good news is that Dungeon Siege II supports up to four players over a LAN or the Internet. In a two or three player game, each player can bring along several characters, which is a pretty unusual feature.

Even if it wasn’t the final code on show, I have to say that I’m definitely looking forward to Dungeon Siege II even as an addicted World of Warcraft player, as it offers a different style of game play. There is only one downside that I’ve found that I can think of – Dungeon Siege II ships on four CDs rather than a single DVD, so installation will be a pain.
