Duke Nukem Forever won’t be the last Duke Nukem game, says Gearbox

Gearbox Software has confirmed that Duke Nukem Forever won’t be the last ever Duke Nukem game.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that the developer didn’t acquire the franchise just for one game.

When asked during a Q&A whether there would be another Duke Nukem game, Pitchford confirmed that it hasn’t been ruled out.

“I certainly hope so. I didn’t acquire the franchise just to make Duke Nukem Forever,” said Pitchford with a chuckle. “That said, I liked that game.”

“I got to see it from a slightly different perspective and it was marvellous.”

There’s no doubt that Duke Nukem Forever was a colossal flop however, from both the gaming industry’s perspective and die-hard fans.

Gearbox admits to this too, and is hopeful that it won’t be the last we see of the Duke Nukem franchise. It just seems that Gearbox might not be quite the right developer to create a new Duke Nukem.

“We’ve done some concept development and I think the challenges are there. Gearbox is very busy. I think the faster way is that a correct developer can become interested and we can work with them.

Even if Gearbox only assists with the next game, Pitchford is confident that such an announcement would rock the industry.

“I think it’s a challenging problem. But, I’ll tell you one thing. When it does happen, there’s no doubt that the whole industry will turn its head and look.”

“Getting attention is one of the hardest things to do. In fact, that’s probably the biggest challenge that {Duke Nukem] Forever had. For ten years, these guys promised that it was going to be the greatest game ever, right?”

“It was legendary in its vapourware status. So it has this particular pole of attention that makes it probably three or four times more famous than Borderlands as a franchise. Not necessarily from a gamers [perspective] – who’s really clued in to what’s going on in game development in the industry – but certainly among the greater community.”
