Dropbox to shut down Mailbox and Carousel apps
Cloud storage firm Dropbox has announced that it’s to shut down the Mailbox email app and the Carousel photography app early next year.
The Mailbox app, which shot to popularity a couple of years back thanks to its helpful gestures assisting users in reaching “inbox zero”, will close down on 26 February 2016.
The app, which Dropbox purchased in 2013, began life on mobile devices, but lesser-used desktop apps are also available.
However, despite an early surge for invites, demand has dropped off lately, with Mailbox barely featuring in the iTunes productivity charts. It’s currently at #233 according to TechCrunch.

As for Carousel, the lesser known app that makes it possible for users to see all of their photos and videos stored in the cloud, will shut down a month later on 31 March. The reason for the stay of execution is to give Dropbox time to build some Carousel features into the main app.
In a statement on Monday, Dropbox claimed it had been a “tough decision” to shut down both apps.
On the company’s official blog, Dropbox co-founders Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi wrote: “Building new products is about learning as much as it’s about making.
“It’s also about tough choices. Over the past few months, we’ve increased our team’s focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox.”
