Dreams might automatically run on PS5

In a slightly guarded interview at the recent Dreams launch, Media Molecule’s creative director confessed that it wouldn’t make sense for the team’s creation to be stuck on the older generation of PlayStation consoles.

When pressed about the PS5, Mark Healy said: “We’re concentrating on PS4 at the moment obviously, but assuming it gets traction and things like that, that’s an obvious progression. It’s a platform, it’s not a game and we want to support it – when other platforms happen, we can’t just abandon the community.”

But there’s a glimmer of hope for any Dreams creators who plan on making the leap to Playstation’s next gen console – the machine comes with backwards compatibility. “So in theory it works anyway,” said Media Molecule’s creative director.

Sony, also present, confirmed that the PS5 will have backwards compatibility “to some extent” but wouldn’t be drawn on further details.

Dreams launches on PS4 today (14 February) but it’s actually been out in early release for about six months. This means that there’s already a huge community of creators who have been busy building games, animation, music and smaller assets for other Dreamers to peruse.

So far, it’s been a big hit with both critics and players, so it would make sense for the creators to make the transition to PS5 as smooth as possible.

It’s a fiendishly difficult concept to explain – part sketchbook, part game engine, and part social network. In essence, it’s a tool that lets you build things then share them easily, and you can play around with other people’s gaming creations too.

Although it’s still early days for the game, Healy has big plans for its future.

“It’s a platform that we’re going to keep updating,” he says. “The first big update – as soon as possible, it’s what I’m working on – is VR. Then after that the thing we’ll concentrate on is multiplayer online.”
