Does the Moto Z Force have the second-best phone camera in the world?
Smartphone makers might well be struggling to innovate, but there’s no doubt that most of us would be lost without our handsets.
Part of the reason we’re now beholden to our devices is the convenience of being able to capture a photo wherever and whenever we feel like it.
This means ensuring a phone has a decent camera has become a huge consideration for anyone looking to invest in a new handset. And if that sounds like you, you may want to consider the Moto Z Force as your next smartphone.
The digital camera benchmarking folks over at DxOMark have bestowed a score of 87 upon Lenovo’s device, perhaps best known for its modular back-plate system that allows you to attach “Motomods” in order to extend the phone’s functionality.
That’s the second-highest score that the outlet has ever awarded to a smartphone, putting the Moto Z Force just behind the HTC 10 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which both scored 88.

It also means the phone performs better than an iPhone – and all in the same week that Apple releases two new “shot on iPhone” ads, no less.
So what sets the Z Force’s camera apart from rivals then? Well, the review notes how the phone “offers consistently good performance across both stills and video”, with exposure, the auto HDR mode, and colour balance specifically highlighted.
Alongside the 21-megapixel lens, there’s a f/1.8 aperture, laser and phase-detection autofocus, optical image stabilisation (OIS), and a dual-LED flash.
In reality, at least according to DxOMark’s tests, this equates to superb performance in both well-lit scenes and low-light environments.
In addition, 4K video capture apparently maintains similar levels of detail and quality, with the review highlighting autofocus as “fast and accurate”, and top-quality video stabilisation.
The Moto Z and Moto Z Force will be available from September, along with the Motomods.
