Digital Photo Frames Stretched To 15 Inches

Pandigital the unlikely mastermind.

Another day another digital photo frame but clearly – in Pandigital’s mind – size matters.

At a whopping 15 inches its ‘PAN-150’ isn’t much smaller than the LCDs we were all using a few years back and more than twice the size of most digital photo frames. Secondly with a 1,024 x 768 native resolution it is a noticeable step up from the 800 x 600 res-es which proliferate the market.

On the downside 1,024 x 768 is a 4:3 aspect ratio and photos aren’t taken in a 4:3 ratio (the eternal digital photo frame dilemma) but Pandigital has developed an internal software to automatically crop shots without image distortion.

There’s 256MB of internal memory (which should be plenty when all those 5/6/7/8MP photos are resized), a USB port and 6-in-1 card reader which should have all the flash memory bases covered. Apart from stills, the frame can also handle Mpeg4 and AVI video files and playback MP3s and it comes with a remote so you won’t have to keep leaping out your chair should the ”wrong” home videos suddenly pop up.

The frame is also impressively slim with a wood bezel making it suitable for wall mounting (if you don’t mind the dangling power cable).

Also tantalising are Pandigital’s promises to upgrade the frame with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity via a firmware update in June. Even further off is its apparent potential to download RSS feeds from photo sharing sites including Flickr which sounds way too Sci-Fi to be true but watch this space…

The PAN-150 will hit the US any minute for just $299. I doubt that will transfer particularly favourably when/if the frame makes it to the UK but it certainly is intriguing. Oh yes it is.
