Dell XPS 15 2020 release date, specs, price and screen

It may not be the star of the current lineup but the Dell XPS 15 2020 could be a hidden gem, with a redesign that makes Dell’s 15-inch offering more compact than ever before.

For the last few years, the XPS 13 has gotten widespread acclaim for its super-small ultrabook chops while the 15-inch version has received quite a bit less attention, that’s despite often having an almost identical design and more horsepower.

Fans of ultrabooks may saw the larger model as too cumbersome for their usual fare. However, now more than ever before, the XPS 15 is simply a slightly larger version of its smaller counterpart but with a few delightful additions.

The 15-inch model adds better speakers and the option for a discrete GPU, making it much more capable of more graphically intensive tasks. If you’re worried these capabilities make the device too beefy for you, the new InfinityEdge display makes this one of the smallest 15-inch laptops available right now and its significantly smaller than the last iteration.

The announcement may have been somewhat surpassed by the return of the even-larger but impressive Dell XPS 17 2020. However, it remains an extremely appealing proposition that’s worth considering for those who want more power than a traditional ultrabook while remaining super-sleek.

Dell XPS 15 2020 release date – When will it launch?

The new XPS 15 will go on sale from May 14 in the UK.

The previous iteration’s release date in June 2019, making the new model’s launch slightly earlier this year.

Dell XPS 15 2020 price – How much will it cost?

The Dell XPS 15 2020 pricing will start at £1599 in the UK.

Strangely, the US pricing will see the laptop start at $1299.99 which is significantly cheaper. We aren’t being royally screwed over, however. Across the pond, Dell offers models which feature 256GB SSDs while, in the UK, we kick off with 512GB.

Dell XPS 15 2020 specs – How powerful is it?

The Dell XPS 15 could boast impressive performance for a relatively portable device, here’s our specs table:

Display 15.6-inch, Full HD / 4K, 60 Hz
Processor Up to Intel Core i7-10875H

(Intel Core Core i9-10885H available post-launch)

RAM Up to 64 GB DDR4
Graphics Up to Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
Storage Up to 2TB SSD
Dimensions 345 x 230 x 18 mm
Weight From 1.83 kg

The performance will provide a nice step up from the XPS 13 2020, bringing Intel’s latest 10th Gen H-series processors rather than Ice Lake, as well as utilising a dedicated GPU.

The Nvidia GeForce 1650 Ti isn’t a boundary breaker, but it will allow for modest video and photo editing along with being able to play lesser demanding games like Fortnite and Apex Legends with little trouble.

We don’t yet know what they are, but Dell will also be selling specific SKUs configured for creators, which it is labelling XPS Creator Edition. The move feels like an important step for guiding creative-focused consumers who may not know what specs work best for them.

Dell XPS 15 2020 screen and design – What does it look like?

The screen was one of the biggest selling points of the XPS 13 2020. The InfinityEdge design allows for XPS devices to be remarkably small for the amount of screen they pack in, so it’s a welcome edition here at 15-inch.

Dell’s 4K panel on the 13-inch model was highly impressive, and the XPS 15 will benefit from that too. The 4K panel does make for reduced battery life, so the Full HD option is also a nice feature.

The design of the XPS 15 is pretty much as expected, essentially just a larger XPS 13. However, this laptop adds up-firing Waves Nx 3D Audio speakers to either side of the keyboard – similar to the MacBook Pro line.

Being a larger XPS 13 is also nothing to sniff at, this devices younger sibling is easily one of the best built and best-looking ultrabooks on the market.

One area where the XPS 15 thankfully departs from the smaller XPS 13 is in ports. The Dell XPS 15 2020 comes with 2x Thunderbolt 3, 1x regular USB-C 3.1 port, a full-size SD card reader and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

While some users may be disappointed to not see a USB-A port, Dell does include a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 and HDMI 2.0 adapter in the box for a bit of relief on that issue.
