Awarding it a healthy 8/10 score in our iPad 4 review, former TrustedReviews Computing Editor Ed Chester writes:

“The new iPad with Retina Display is the best large tablet going with better battery life and performance than both the iPad 3 and the other large tablet competition. It also boasts the best build quality and the most comprehensive selection of truly tablet-oriented apps.

There’s no shortage of people with an opinion on the iPad, with the 4th-gen Apple model currently enjoying a 4.5/5 star rating on Amazon based on more than 500 user reviews – a figure that includes over 430 full 5 star reviews.

To give you an idea of why you might like it, here’s what Top 1,000 Amazon UK reviewer AquaViola wrote shortly after its release:

“It is surprising to me how much the iPad has been part of my home life. It makes checking emails and internet browsing more social. You don’t need to go to a big machine with a keyboard for casual searching – you can have something closer to a big book.

“The battery life is amazing. I have used it for web surfing for several half hours, but only got down to 85% complete.

“Overall, a very good investment, and something that I use every day”.

Writing more recently, Junebug adds:

“Absolutely brilliant what can be done on an iPad! This is a better size for running a business (and gaming!) – less eye-strain!”

This isn’t the latest Apple tablet, and nor is it particularly new – in fact, it’s a refurbished device originally launched in 2012. But before you click away, let us explain why it’s still well worth considering.

The tablet space hasn’t evolved as rapidly as, say, the smartphone world, meaning that something made in 2012 is still more than serviceable for most users – I’m completely content with my iPad Air 1, which was first released in 2013.

Worried about buying a ‘second-hand’ tablet? Fear not, because the refurb job on this device has been completed under Amazon’s Certified Refurbished scheme, meaning you’ll get a one-year warranty bundled in for peace of mind.

The real kicker to our mind, though, is that the iPad 4 will be eligible for the iOS 10 update coming later this year, so you’ll be able to take advantage of all of Apple’s software innovations at a fraction of the cost – a current-gen flagship iPad measuring an identical 9.7-inches diagonally would set you back at least £500!

This deal might not be for everyone – pro users, for instance, may want to look at newer-gen products featuring the absolute latest processing power – but if you just want a high quality tablet to kick back with, the iPad 4 will do everything you ask of it and then some.
