Could Apple’s rumored wireless headphones be better than Beats?

Apple is working on high-end wireless headphones that will connect to the iPhone through a bespoke Bluetooth-like communications standard, one analyst has claimed.

The ever-willing Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI securities says the audio devices will be pitched as more premium than the company’s own Beats Audio brand.

Kuo, who has a better track record than most, told investors the new Bluetooth-like tech will offer improved power saving.

He wrote (via 9to5Mac): “We believe Apple will position Beats in the midrange market once it launches Apple’s own-brand Bluetooth headphones, in order to maximize profit with a dual-brand strategy.

“We also believe Apple will have its own-designed Bluetooth-like communication chip, given its higher requirements for power-saving, communication specs and potential rapid growth of Bluetooth headphone shipments.”

Kuo did not say whether these personal audio devices would be announced at the iPhone 7 launch event on Wednesday.

Recent rumours have suggested Apple is indeed working on wireless headphones of some kind as it shifts away from the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Many observers believe Apple will bundle the existing EarPods with a 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter, or go straight to Lightning EarPods.

Apple may also choose to announce new Beats products during the iPhone 7 launch tomorrow.
