Chevy’s 2016 vehicles will give your phone its own air con unit

U.S. auto giant Chevrolet has announced a selection of its 2016 vehicles will feature a new cooling system especially for smartphones.

The Active Phone Cooling plate in the compartment beneath the central console will offer a brand new way to combat handset overheating woes.

The system will work to cool down battery packs so in-car smartphone usage, like music streaming, navigation and hands-free calling, isn’t interrupted by having to power down overheated devices.

As an added bonus, the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system will also offer wireless charging for compatible handsets.

In a press release, Chevy explained how it’ll work: “An air vent connected directly to the car’s air conditioning and ventilation system is directed to the charging bin where the phone rests for wireless charging, sending cool air to help lower the phone’s temperature. Active Phone Cooling operates only when the HVAC system is turned on by the driver.”

The industry-first technology will be available in Chevy’s 2016 Impala, Malibu, Volt and Cruze vehicles.

Smartphone overheating is a problem experienced by most users at some point, often meaning they have to switch their phone off until temperatures lower.

It can be caused by especially balmy weather, intensive usage and even just by charging the device. Chevy, it seems, has a solution, as least while we’re driving.

“Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel,” said Impala engineer Dan Lascu. “Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem.”
