Channel 4 HD Launches

Yet another compelling reason to invest in Sky HD. As if you needed one.

Nursery rhymes might have us believe that today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic, but in reality anyone venturing down to the woods today will be surprised only by how empty it will be. The reason for this is that today sees the launch of Channel 4 HD on Sky, so inevitably all the bears will be at home enjoying high definition broadcasts of Ugly Betty and, if my wishes are fulfilled, The OC (please don’t judge me!).

Some of you might remember that this falls right in line with earlier predictions that December would see the launch of the service, so kudos to Channel 4 for not suffering from the same innumerable delays that seem to plague the BBC. There is arguably one downside with this HD channel, though, which BBC HD doesn’t suffer from; namely that only Sky subscribers will be able to tune in currently, although Virgin Media should see its arrival at a later date, with the same being true of free satellite broadcasting.

On the content front, Channel 4 should also be helped in that a lot of its programmes, certainly most of the ones worth watching, are US imports and already filmed in HD. We’ll also be seeing a range of home-grown programmes in high definition appearing, including Hollyoaks as of spring next year when it makes the move to high definition recording. A variety of films, both new and old, will also be available. If you happen to have an HDTV, Sky HD and a hankering to spend yet more time enjoying both, Channel 4 HD is on channel 140.
