Half of the UK’s 16-24 year-olds registered on 4oD

Half of the UK’s 16 to 24-year-olds are registered to use 4oD, Channel 4’s on demand TV catch-up service, the public service broadcaster has revealed.

In total, Channel 4 has confirmed that 4oD registered users have now passed 6 million and new users are signing up at a rate of over 10,000 per day. Nearly half say they watch more Channel 4 programmes as a result of registering. Although you do not have to register to use the broadcaster’s catch-up
TV and on-demand internet service but extra features, such as exclusive
content and playlists, become available if you do.

The statistics were announced this week by Sarah Milton, Head of Video on Demand for Channel 4, at the  Digital TV World Summit in London, who added that 4oD is on course to reach half a billion streams this year.

Of the 6 million total registered users, 70 per cent are aged 16-34 and 35 per cent are in the 16-24 age range. Overall, 60 percent of 4oD programmes are viewed by registered users.

The service was launched online in 2006, making Channel 4 among the first broadcasters to offer its own internet video platform. It’s currently available on 12 devices, with mobiles and tablets representing 15 per cent of 4oD’s views. 4oD recently expanded onto YouView set-top boxes and will soon appear on the new Freesat FreeTime-enabled PVR.

Milton explained that on-demand still accounted for a small proportion of Channel 4 viewing overall but it’s growing and for some programmes it is especially popular. More than a quarter of viewers of the third season of Misfits came via 4oD, for example, and 26 percent of viewers for the comedy New Girl.

As reported recently, 4oD is working on a download feature for offline viewing, similar to the BBC iPlayer on some devices, among other upgrades for 2013.
