CeBIT 2007: Sony Ericsson Rolls Out W660i Walkman

One for the masses, amongst a lot of kit we'd already seen.

There was a lot of huff and puff over at Sony Ericsson but not a lot to show for it. Cynics may argue this sums up the company’s activity over the last 12 months, and I’m (s)not(/s) (s)not(/s) one of them, but at least it did have one new handset on show.

The ‘W660i’ is a 3G candy bar with a none too exciting 2in 176 x 220 262k colour screen, 2MP camera (with VGA for video), and the ubiquitous Bluetooth. That said the W660 will display album art, is just 15mm thick and weights 96 grams while it’s also good for 360 hours of standby or six hours nattering.

A 512MB Memory Stick Micro comes bundled (which is not to be sniffed at considering Sony’s hefty mark ups on its proprietary flash formats) and we’ll see it on networks at some point next quarter.

Sadly there was no sign of the recently leaked K850i on the stand and when I pushed company reps about it they flatly denied all knowledge of such a device. Instead they claimed there would be no five megapixel Sony Ericsson phones this ”year”. I tend not to believe them, don’t you…?

There was better luck with the W880i though and judging by the swarm of visitors around it this looks certain to be a popular model. Personally, I didn’t find anything particularly outstanding about it: he interface is snappy and the rubber back is good in hand yet the screen feels too small, the buttons wobbly and the styling like something from a rejected Denon design proposal.

That said, I’ve never been a fan of Sony Ericsson handsets so what do I know? So expect both the W660 and W880 to fly off shelves when they arrive in the next few weeks…
