Everyone now knows that using our smartphones at night stops us getting to sleep. These sunglasses hope to solve the problem.
The issue is that the blue light from screens on our smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers inhibits the body’s production of melatonin, which is the hormone that helps us sleep. The blue light from our gadgets tricks our bodies into thinking it’s daytime rather than night, and so upsets our circadian rhythm. Which would explain why you find hard to sleep after working late or reading on your phone.
Carbonshade have red lenses that, its makers claim, filter out blue light. So in theory, you can use your phone just before you bed down for the night without any harmful side effects. Though
They claim to preserve 99.8 per cent of melatonin.
They come in a few different styles: chic, wayfarer, clubmaster, aviator, classic and retro. The hinges are spring-loaded, allowing the arms to extend wider, meaning that one size should fit all.

The science seems to stack up, but we’re hesitant to say they work without trying them. But surely there’s a better solution than donning a pair of glasses to use your phone at night? It just puts a barrier between you and the technology (it’s the same reason 3D TV failed to take off). We’d rather a software solution was baked into the phone, like Apple is planning for iOS 9.3.
