Has Capcom confirmed a Dead Rising sequel is in the works?

It’s a bad day for Puzzle Fighter fans but an excellent one for Dead Rising’s. Capcom has confirmed that it’s shutting down its mobile game Puzzle Fighter, but is doing so to focus on its “flagship Dead Rising franchise.”

In a statement issued via a Capcom blog post, the company’s Vancouver studio confirmed its plans. “As the studio is dedicating its focus to our flagship Dead Rising franchise, we have decided to sunset Puzzle Fighter. The game will be removed from app stores on July 1 and servers will be shut down on July 31.”

When we reached out to Capcom for comment, a spokesperson said “the studio is focused on the Dead Rising series, however no titles have been announced at this time.”

Dead Rising 4 launched in December 2016

Although this is the beginning of the end for Puzzle Fighter, there are still a few more months of events until it will disappear completely. Upcoming characters such as Regina and Ada Wong will be made available for free alongside the new stages.

The Dead Rising franchise has been around since the early days of the Xbox 360, and focusses around killing zombies in weird and wonderful ways.

Initial entries were filled with creativity, but suffered from their fare share of odd design decisions. As the series has progressed however, many have felt that the initial charm has worn off, and the initially left-field design choices have begun to grate more.

We’re hopeful that a potential Dead Rising 5 will finally restore the game to its glory days, but we’ll have to wait for the game’s official reveal before we can get a better idea of its quality.
