Canon has announced its latest slimline compact camera, the Canon PowerShot S110. It will cost £429.99 and will be available from late October.
A camera for those who want an easy-to-use device that can still produce decent photos, the Canon PowerShot S110 packs plenty of advanced features into a small body. Top of the list is the 12.1MP CMOS sensor, which uses the latest DIGIC 5 image processor. This brings faster speed and better low-light performance to the table than the previous engine.
The Canon PowerShot S110 uses a 24mm f/2.0 lens with a 5x optical zoom. For those longer focal length shots, it has a 4-stop image stabilisation system to keep your shots nice ‘n’ sharp. There’s also an option to extend the zoom up to 10x using a digital mode Canon calls ZoomPlus. It claims to offer “more visible detail than conventional digital zoom” but we’d advise considering this a 5x zoom camera only.
An obvious choice for a high-end compact like this, the S110 offers both full auto and manual modes, as well as RAW support. It can capture video at resolutions up to 1080p, and features an HDMI port for easy connection to a TV or projector. On its rear is a 3in display with a capacitive touchscreen that supports touch focusing.
One of the smartest features of the PowerShot S110, though, is its inbuilt Wi-Fi connectivity. This lets you sync photos with a computer without need for a cable. However, to get GPS location info attached to your snaps, you’ll need to use the S110 with a GPS-enabled smartphone or tablet. Canon offers a CameraWindow app that lets the camera talk to these other devices.
Canon’s S110 was announced ahead of the Photokina trade show, alongside the PowerShot G15 and the EOS 6D.
The Canon PowerShot S110 will be available in late October and will sell for £429.99.
