Just three weeks after Bulldog announced it was pulling out the consumer space but keeping its existing retail customers the notorious ISP has decided to flog them off.
118,000 users will be up for grabs but at this stage it is unclear whether they will technically remain under the Bulldog label or be moved to new contracts under a different brand. In a statement issued by the company it simply said:
“We are now looking for a provider to buy our 118,000 strong Bulldog retail customer base. It will simplify our relationship with wholesale customers by making it clear that we will not compete with them.”
The news means the company is whistling an entirely different tune to the one it bleated out last month when it agreed to stand by its consumer base indefinitely and even continued to sign up new customers until 1 July. Quite who the buyer will be given the levels of tech support required to service such a number is hard to say, but I would be tempted to suggest Vodafone which has held a long running interest in the sector.
All in all the takeover of Bulldog can now officially be classed as a retail disaster. The ISP was much revered when C&W bought it for £18m in 2004 but two years and a further £175m later it has a dedicated anti-Bulldog website, has been featured on the BBC’s Watchdog complaints programme and had to publicly apologise to its user base.
