Budget iPhone 5C price to set you back £320

The heavily rumoured budget iPhone 5C could cost around £320 at launch, latest reports have suggested, a price tag which would see it line up as anything but a budget offering.

Expected to be formally unveiled alongside the new flagship iPhone 5S next month, the budget iPhone 5C has long been rumoured to be a plastic bodied mid-range handset tasked with brining Apple’s ecosystem to a broader audience on the smartphone scene.

While according to industry analysts the budget iPhone 5C price will be set around the “$400 to $500” mark (£255 – £320), the new, more affordable Apple-branded handset is said to be set to replace the current iPhone 5 on retailers’ shelves.

Although the high-end iPhone 5S will take over as the lead Apple handset, instead of dropping the iPhone 5 down to a more affordable price point, it has been claimed the Cupertino company will scrap its metal backed handset in favour of the iPhone 5C at the same point in the market. The aging iPhone 4S will then reportedly from in price to appease the entry level market users.

“We’ve learned that the iPhone 5 line will be terminated from 4Q13, while the iPhone 4S line will carry on,” KGI analyst and repeated Apple tipster Mingchi Kuo said in a recent note to investors.

“From this, we infer that iPhone 5C is launched to replace iPhone 5. In other words, the 5C model will be positioned as midrange. We forecast its retail price to be US$400-500.”

Further discussing the new iPhone line up he added:  “We expect iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 will fall into the price ranges of  US$600-700, US$400-500, US$300-400 and US$200-300, respectively, in the new product  cycle. Since iPhone 4’s specs may not be adequate to run on iOS7, we think this line may be terminated.”

Recent budget iPhone 5C rumours have suggested the heavily mooted phone will be officially unveiled alongside the iPhone 5S during an as yet unconfirmed September 10 launch event before going on sale later the same month.

Cutting costs by trading in a metal back design for a new plastic construction, the iPhone 5C is believed to feature a specs sheet similar to that of the iPhone 5 with an A6 CPU lining up alongside an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera.

Expected to be made available in “6-8 colours,” the iPhone 5C will run the recently unveiled iOS 7 operating system although recent reports have suggested that it could omit support for Siri, Apple’s voice activated user assistant.
