BT TV finally allowing offline downloads, but it comes at a price

BT has followed in the footsteps of Sky with a new subscription-based service for its BT TV customers, designed to make multi-screen viewing and watching on the go easier.

For an extra £5 a month, current subscribers can access the new BT TV App Extra service, which facilitates viewing on up to four devices (previously two) beyond the set-top box. So, for example, users could be watching content on their set-top box, while beaming Premier League football to a Chromecast from BT Sport.

The service, which is similar to the Sky Go Extra platform, is compatible with Samsung Smart TVs, Apple TV and Google Chromecast, with the Amazon Fire TV compatibility coming soon. We’re hoping that BT adds our favourite video game consoles and Roku set-top boxes in the near future, but there’s been no word from BT on other devices just yet.

It’ll also enable users to download and play the subscription catch up content, as well as BT Store rentals and purchases within the BT App. It’s a long-awaited feature that will enable subscribers to pre-download content and watch it without sapping their data or during times when Wi-Fi access is limited, such as on a morning commute.

Existing BT TV subscribers will be able to purchase App Extra as a bolt on to their current tariff. While the price point would be a stickler to some BT subscribers, it’s the same as what Sky charges to access its Sky Go Extra service.

Those who choose not to pay for the extra service will still be able to stream live and on-demand content from the BT apps and website.
