Broadband Users Get 48% Of Advertised Speed

New nationwide speed tests reveal latest shocking stats.

Expect the protests from ISPs to once more start flying in…

Yup, ISP aggregator and advice site Broadband Expert has been at it again, compiling nationwide speed tests conducting on its website to reveal some startling statistics, most notably that – on average – broadband users are getting just 48 per cent of their advertised package speeds.

Listening to feedback from its previous results, Broadband Expert has now helpfully grouped results by speed package with 41,230 user tests conducted over January and February. Consequently, we now learn the average speed achieved on packages advertised as 16Mbit+ was just 8,6Mbit while 8Mbit connections average 3.41Mbit. By contrast, the relatively lowly 2Mbit connection averaged 1.76Mbit – 87 per cent of its claimed maximum.

Broadband Expert Technical director, William Harvey commented: “It seems clear that providers are promising speeds far greater than they are capable of delivering with top end packages. If the ISPs set a realistic expectation of the speeds that can be achieved, they are much less likely to upset consumers than those who advertise fast speeds and under deliver”.

Harvey is spot on here and – as you can see from the tables – Toucan and Tiscali are consistently the worst offenders across the board. By contrast Virgin Media scores predictably well with its cable network though its minority ADSL service clearly needs work.

Ultimately, the way forward is for Ofcom to step in and force ISPs to quote real world averages for their packages. This would force more investment in line quality not just sales teams. Left unchecked however ISPs are never likely to go down this route voluntarily given the poor performance of most. Instead they’d rather keep users in the dark and leave their technical support desks swamped.
