Borderlands 3 to be “built specifically for next-gen consoles”

Borderlands 3 will be developed specifically for the Xbox One and PS4, according to 2K Games.

We already new there was a brand new Borderlands game in development, but now we know the game will be “specifically built” for new-gen consoles.

The news comes via 2K President Karl Slatoff during the publishers’ earning call post financial report.

In between all the money talk and financial gumpf, Slatoff gave us a beautiful teaser about the upcoming Borderlands game – currently dubbed Borderlands 3.

“Looking further ahead, we have robust long-term pipelines of titles in development, including groundbreaking new intellectual properties and new releases from our proven franchises,” said Slatoff. “For example, we can confirm that 2K and Gearbox Software will develop and all-new Borderlands game built specifically for next-gen consoles.”

Of course, Slatoff doesn’t actually call the game Borderlands 3, so it could well be the previously trademarked Borderworlds or a completely different Borderlands.

However, the way it’s mentioned suggests it is the third full Borderlands game “built specifically” Xbox One and PS4.

That could well mean Borderlands 3 is a new-gen only title, with Xbox 360 and PS3 left behind, or that there will be a separate one for last-gen consoles.

The first Borderlands game for Xbox One and PS4 comes in the form of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which includes Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and all previously-released DLC.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection will be released on Xbox One and PS4 on March 27.
