BMW, Intel, and Mobileye working on self-driving car

BMW has announced it will be working with Intel and Mobileye to produce a driverless car that could go into production by 2021.

Intel is involved to provide processing power while the Israeli firm Mobileye will supply driver assistance systems and sensors.

BMW has already been working on self-driving cars for some time, and announced the new partnership as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations.

The three companies will work together on systems that can gradually reduce the role of a human driver, eventually resulting in full autonomous cars.

In a statement, BMW said its “iNEXT model will be the foundation for BMW Group’s autonomous driving strategy”.

It added that this would “set the basis for fleets of fully autonomous vehicles, not only on highways but also in urban environments for the purpose of automated ridesharing solutions.”

The collaboration is aimed at reaching a stage when vehicles can drive without a human on-board, which the statement refers to as ‘level 5’ of autonomous driving.

“This partnership between BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye will help us to quickly deliver on our vision to reinvent the driving experience,” said Intel CEO Brian Krzanich.

“We bring a broad set of in-vehicle and cloud computing, connectivity, safety and security, and machine-learning assets to this collaboration enabling a truly end to end solution.”

BMW revealed in May that it was planning to release a a fully functional autonomous vehicle as soon as 2021.

The announcement followed the debut of the German Manufacturer’s VISION NEXT 100 concept designs, which could be used as inspiration for the BMW iNEXT car – the model which today’s statement mentions as the foundation for the company’s self-driving strategy.
