They're not going to be cheap...
So Blu-ray is coming on the 23 May right? After all Sony said so. Well yes, but it’s also coming in March too…
The difference lies in the type of media. Pre-recorded Hollywood blockbusters with all the fancy-shmansy packaging and endless video extras that no one ever bothers to watch but is evaluated thoroughly before purchase arrives in May. Sony has just revealed the blanks come in just a few weeks.
Strangely, it is the more complex media – BD-RW – that will arrive first in mid March with the singular BR-R discs turning up in April. The capacity of both formats will be single layer (25GB), enough for two hours fifteen minutes of high def 24Mbps video and providing five times the storage of a single layer DVD. They write at 2x (yes, we’re begin at the bottom again) which equates to a transfer rate of 72Mbps.
Like all new media initial prices won’t be for the faint hearted too with BD-R discs costing 25 euros and BD-RW discs selling for 30 euros. Sony may have just merged it optical drive business with NEC but since production from the newly formed Sony NEC Optiarc Inc isn’t expected for a few months yet this looks to be a dying shot for the old Sony wing.
We’ll be headed off to CeBIT today where we expect to find a mass of Blu-ray and HD DVD equipped notebooks on show. The time is growing close people, prepare your wallets.
