BlackBerry ready to ditch BB10 for Android

BlackBerry could be ready to ditch its own BB10 operating system for Android.
There have been numerous rumours of late that the Canadian manufacturer was all ready to jack in its OS efforts and jump aboard the Android ship.
The relative success and positive reception of the BlackBerry Priv only strengthened the case for such a decision.
Now one BlackBerry executive has given the strongest indication yet that the company is adopting Google’s mobile OS for good.
“The PRIV device is essentially our transition to Android ecosystem,” BlackBerry senior director Damian Tay told India’s Economic Times. “As we secure Android, over a period of time, we would not have two platforms, and may have only Android as a platform [for smartphones].”
The primary reason for BlackBerry’s decision to go all-in with Android is, according to Tay, the platform’s app ecosystem.

For now, Tay said, BB10 and Android will sit side by side on BlackBerry devices. In particular he points out that BB10 remains more secure than Android, which is why governments continue to prefer it for their various departments.
However, Tay is also very clear that “The future is really Android.” The company wants to transition those aforementioned government customers to its Android-based platform in future.
