BlackBerry PlayBook software update lands, not BB10

Following the recent BlackBerry 10 release, BlackBerry has issued a new software update for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, although it is not the BB10 overhaul promised by the Canadian manufacturer.

Bringing a host of new features to the out-of-favour tablet, BlackBerry has confirmed that the BlackBerry PlayBook update 2.1.0.1526 has launched today with owners of the ageing iPad mini and Google Nexus 7 rival now able to access the recently rebranded BlackBerry World app and content store.

With in-app purchases also introduced, the newly launched BlackBerry PlayBook update has added a selection of bug fixes and improvements to the tablet, with browser and audio performances bolstered whilst users of the largely forgotten device can now use SMS over bridge.

Whilst the latest BlackBerry PlayBook update has failed to fulfil on the BlackBerry Z10 manufacturer’s promise to introduce its latest BB10 OS to the 7-inch, bezel-heavy device, the Canadian company has not yet missed its extremely loose time frame for the in-demand update.

Earlier this year, Rob Orr, BlackBerry’s Vice President of Product Management stated: “At some point after launch we’ll bring BB10 to our PlayBooks, yes.”

BlackBerry, formally known as RIM, is widely expected to expand its tablet contingent in the near future, with a BlackBerry PlayBook follow-on tipped to be formally unveiled at BlackBerry Live in May.

BlackBerry PlayBook Specs

Released back in 2011, the BlackBerry PlayBook failed to front a strong attack on Apple’s dominance of the tablet market with the iPad range.

Measuring in a 10mm thick and 425g in weight, the somewhat dated BlackBerry PlayBook specs sees the tablet play host to a 7-inch 1024 x 600p resolution LCD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and the option of Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi plus cellular connectivity options.

With a 5-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a second, 3-megapixel snapper up front, the BlackBerry PlayBook features list is rounded off by the option of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of integrated storage.
