Tru App BlackBerry 10 app launches as Skype rival

Following yesterday’s BlackBerry 10 launch, Truphone has released its new Tru App BlackBerry 10 app, allowing users to new free international VoIP calls.

Lining up as a Skype rival, Tru App 5.0 offers BlackBerry 10 OS users savings of up to 90 per cent on international voice calls via 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi connections, or calls to other Tru App user for free.

First introduced as a BlackBerry app in 2008, the new BlackBerry 10 platform has allowed Truphone to develop a completely new app, providing users with an improved, more convenient user interface.

“Before BlackBerry 10, [BlackBerry’s] operating systems limited developers by not providing the right APIs or restricting system access to the Wi-Fi stack,” TruPhone CTO, James Tagg said. “Those limitations made it impossible for Truphone to offer BlackBerry users the same functionality we make available on other operating systems. BlackBerry 10 provides a much more developer-friendly environment, including functionality that enables Truphone to deliver its improved user experience to BlackBerry 10 smartphones and tablet users.”

The Truphone Tru App 5.0 allows customers to make and receive calls when there are travelling abroad without having to incur hefty roaming bills.

The new BlackBerry 10 app from Truphone, released today alongside the new BlackBerry Z10 handset, also features enhanced audio quality to make users feel more connected to their international colleagues.

“Voice technologies in mobile continue to mature and companies like Truphone continue to find ways to innovate on the BlackBerry 10 platform. This is the best time for developers to take advantage of the wide array of tools for the BlackBerry platform and to be among the first crop of applications available to BlackBerry 10 customers,” said Alec Saunders, Vice President of Developer Relations and Ecosystems at BlackBerry.

“By leveraging the open nature of the BlackBerry 10 platform and the breadth of API support we have, Truphone is now able to offer enterprises and BlackBerry customers VoIP solutions that will enhance communications immensely,” added Saunders.

Tru App 5.0 will be available from today on the all new BB10 BlackBerry World store.
