We are now in day two of Amazon’s festival of tech discounts, otherwise known as Amazon Prime Day 2019 – here’s how to get the best camera-related deals and bargains as they happen.
While smartphones can give you a great photography taster, only standalone cameras can provide the manual controls, handling and optical quality to truly take your snapping to the next level. That’s where premium compacts, mirrorless cameras and full-frame DSLRs come in – and where Amazon Prime Day can save you big bucks.
There are already some cracking deals live today, with lots more likely to be added from tomorrow morning. These cover everything from Sony’s RX100 series compacts to full-frame beats like the Canon 6D Mark II.
You’ll need to be quick though – many of today’s deals are due to end before midnight tonight, while Lightning deals will go even quicker in just a few hours. So make sure you keep refreshing this page and bookmark it in the middle of your browser toolbar, as we’ll be updating it with new deals as soon as they hit Amazon’s digital shelves.
It’s not just about Amazon either – other retailers have joined the party with their own deals, and we’ll be bringing all camera-related sizzlers from them (including drones and action cameras) on this page too.

If you’re already laser-focused on a particular camera though, it’s time to see if it’s one of the models that’s been sprinkled with Prime Day discount sparkle…
Best Amazon Prime Day camera deals
Cue ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac, because Amazon Prime Day is go! And there are already some excellent deals, whether you’re on the hunt for a compact, full-frame DSLR or even our favourite 360-degree camera. Here are the best live ones so far:
Best Amazon Camera Deals
The lowest ever price for one of our favourite premium, one-inch compact cameras of recent years. The G7 X Mark II is great for stills thanks to its 20.2-megapixel sensor and f/1.8-f/2.8 lens, and particularly strong at vlogging too, as shown by its popularity among YouTubers.
A cracking deal on this middle child in the Sony RX100 series, our favourite range of compact cameras. It has a smartphone-trumping one-inch sensor, an excellent 24-70mm lens and the ability to shoot at a speedy 10fps.
The lowest ever price for this full-frame DSLR, which originally went on sale for £1,999 just two years ago. The 6D Mark II combines a large sensor with a host of modern features, including Dual Pixel AF, a vari-angle touchscreen and a huge 1,200-shot battery life.
An excellent deal on this travel camera with 30x optical zoom and 4K video recording. It may have been recently succeeded by the TZ95, but the TZ90 is much the same camera, including the handy viewfinder and impressive stills.
Our current number one waterproof camera, the TG-5 is the best rugged point-and-shoot around, with its 12-megapixel sensor and f/2.0 aperture producing great photos. The newer TG-6 is coming soon, but isn't a major upgrade.
Canon's most simple, entry-level DSLR was already pretty affordable, but it's a bit of a bargain at this price (which includes a kit lens). It has an 18-megapixel sensor, Full HD video recording and is compatible with Canon's huge range of EF lenses.
Prime Day Lightning Deal – Sony A6500
An incredible deal on one of the best mirrorless cameras you can buy. The A6500 is a superb all-rounder, combining five-axis image stabilisation, class-leading autofocus, 4K video recording and a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. Combine Amazon's saving with Sony's cashback and you have a brilliant (time limited) buy.
Amazon Prime Day – Best Canon lens deals
A fantastic deal on this excellent 50mm prime lens for Canon's full-frame and APS-C cameras. Ideal for shooting portraits, its image quality isn't far off the £1,239 EF 50mm f/1.2 and it has great ergonomics too.
This superb pancake prime lens is ideal for beginners and owners of APS-C Canon DSLRs who are looking for a trusty, wide-angle companion to their kit zoom. It consistently produces detailed, sharp shots and is a real bargain even without this big discount.
If you own an APS-C Canon DSLR and like shooting landscapes or architectural shots, then now might be the time to snap up this excellent wide-angle zoom lens. A great walkaround lens for any collection, it has the added bonus of an STM motor for quiet operation when shooting video.
The perfect travel companion for a smaller mirrorless Canon camera like the EOS M50, this small prime lens is great for shooting city skylines or rolling hills. At this price, it's a must for your EF-M collection.
Price drop – Fujifilm X-T100
The perfect 'learner' camera for beginners looking to step up from smartphone photography, the X-T100 was already great value – but is now one of the best camera buys around with this huge discount. It has a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, an electronic viewfinder and is compatible with arguably the best range of lenses around.
Price drop – Panasonic TZ100
A cracking deal on what is, at this price, the best value premium compact camera you can buy. The TZ100 has a large one-inch sensor, 10x optical zoom, an electronic viewfinder and can shoot 4K video. It's a fine all-rounder that originally went on sale for £549.
GoPro Hero 6 Black – Price drop
The lowest ever price for the Hero 6 Black, this is an excellent deal for what is still one of the best action cameras around. It shoots 4K video at 60fps, 12-megapixel stills and has superb image stabilisation.
Camera deals at other retailers
Prime Day isn’t just about Amazon – other retailers are joining the fun and hosting their own summer discount parties. Here are the best ones from the likes of Currys, John Lewis and Argos:
Best John Lewis Camera Deals
This is the best deal we've seen so far on Nikon's superb Z6, which is currently our number one camera. This instant full-frame classic has great handling, image quality and stabilisation, and works well with Nikon's F Mount glass via the FTZ adaptor.
Sony's RX100 series are the best compacts around for those who want great image quality without the bulk of a DSLR. This Mark III model originally went on sale for £700 and remains an excellent compact, thanks to its 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens. This £100 cashback deal makes it a great buy.
Looking to get started with DSLR photography? It'll be tough the find a better deal than this for Canon's excellent 200D. It may have just been succeeded by the 250D, but the 200D offers better value at this price – particularly when bundled with 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses that make a great foundation for your new hobby.
A fantastic little travel camera, the OM-D E-M10 Mark II combines five-axis image stabilisation and a tilting three-inch touchscreen. It's also part of the Micro Four Thirds system, which means you can have your pick from the biggest lens system around – one of which is included in this deal.
Best Argos Camera Deals
Looking for an 'advanced beginner' DSLR? The 750D is a great option at this price, which makes it much more affordable than the newer 800D. Its autofocus and articulating touchscreen are also better than the cheaper 2000D and 4000D.
Now available again at its Black Friday 2018 price, the Mavic Air is a fantastic starter drone for those looking to take some excellent 4K aerial videos. Smaller and more travel-friendly than the Mavic 2 Pro series, the Mavic Air is the best sub-£1,000 drone you can buy. This deal is for the Flame Red version only.
Best Currys PC World Camera deals
If you're looking for a system camera that packs a big APS-C sensor into a small, lightweight body, then this EOS M100 bundle is a cracking deal. It includes two lenses that together give you virtually all the reach you'll need for most situations.
Its successor, the XP140, may have arrived recently, but the XP130 is the better buy at this price. Waterproof to 20 metres, its 5x optical zoom and tough build make it the ideal smartphone stand-in for the beach or holidays with the kids.
How do I choose the right Prime Day camera deal for me?
Every camera is a compromise, so spending more won’t necessarily get you a better camera – it very much depends on how you want to use it and what you want to photograph.
Looking for pocketable point-and-shoot? Compact cameras are still your best bet, and still have advantages over smartphones like long optical zoom (25x and beyond) and tilting screens. Premium compact cameras manage to pack even bigger sensors (one-inch or even APS-C) into pocket-sized form factors, though they often lack the viewfinder or tilting screen that you’ll find on bigger cameras.
If you’re really looking to expand your photographic horizons, though, you’ll need an interchangeable lens camera that’ll shoot in semi-automatic or manual modes. It’s here that you’ll need to decide between a DSLR or mirrorless camera. DSLRs do still hold some advantages, including long battery lives, comfortable handling and a huge range of lenses. But mirrorless cameras are now at the forefront of camera tech and otherwise come with few compromises and many advantages, including incredible autofocus and compact designs.
Already a pretty experienced snapper and looking to take a step up? Full-frame cameras are the next traditional step. These have even larger sensors than APS-C cameras, which usually provide better low light performance at higher ISOs and improved dynamic range. Unless you’re prepared to go very high-end, though, it’s worth bearing in mind that the latter are often better for burst shooting action scenes or achieving long zoom.
Looking to buy a camera to mainly shoot video? DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are great options for this too. Look for ones that have articulating touchscreens, microphone inputs, and optical image stabilisation. Our favourite ones right now are the Canon EOS M50 and Panasonic G90.
What else should I consider when choosing a Prime Day camera deal?
If you’re looking to get an interchangeable lens camera, then bear in mind the lens system you’re buying into. It can be tempting to blow your budget on a well-priced full-frame camera, but remember that full-frame lenses are generally pretty pricey because their optics need to be much larger.
Will that limit the variety of glass you can buy your new camera in the future? If so, it might be worth going for a camera with a smaller sensor and lens system, like APS-C or Micro Four Thirds, and spending the money you’ve saved on lenses or accessories like a travel-friendly camera bag.
It’s also worth bearing in mind the kind of photography you do and which lens system is likely to suit it best. In terms of sheer choice, the systems with the widest range of lenses are Micro Four Thirds, Canon EF and Sony’s E-mount. But if you’re mainly into street photography and want some good quality, well-priced prime lenses, then Fujifilm’s X Series is probably your best bet.
Lastly, it’s worth considering whether you really need an interchangeable lens camera. While these cameras do give you the best combination of versatility and image quality, there’s not much point in getting one if you leave the same lens attached to the front. If you want the convenience of a DSLR without the bulk or expense of multiple lenses, then you might be better off with a bridge camera.
These give you full creative control with the need to lug around a bag of heavy lenses. And now they’re slightly less popular than today’s more stylish mirrorless cameras, bridge cameras can also be something of a camera bargain.
What is Amazon Prime Day?

What Prime Day camera deals can we expect?
In the past couple of weeks, we’ve already seen some fantastic one-off deals on the likes of the Canon 200D, which has given us a taster of what’s to come.
Like previous years, the most likely cameras of all types – be they a compact, mirrorless camera or full-frame DSLR – to get discounts are ones that have recently been succeeded by newer models.
While it’s tempting to go for brand new models, there is great value to be found in their predecessors, which means savings that can be put towards a new lens or two.
With sensor and autofocus technology improving greatly in the last few years, many newer models will often differentiate themselves with features like faster burst speeds and improved screen resolution, which are useful additions but not necessarily things that will improve their pure photo quality.
Another range that has traditionally seen discounts on Amazon Prime Day is Sony’s RX100 series, which have long been our favourite premium compacts. While newer models like the RX100 VI fetch upwards of £1,150, their predecessors remain very strong performers thanks to their high-quality optics. Look out for discounts on the RX100 III and RX100 IV.
While most Prime Day discounts tend to focus on mid-range compacts, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, there could well be price drops for some older full-frame models that have since been somewhat overshadowed, if not outperformed by, newer mirrorless equivalents. These include the likes of Nikon’s D750 and Canon’s 5D Mark IV and 6D Mark II.
Lastly, at the other end of the camera scale, it seems likely that older GoPro action cams will also get some generous price cuts. With the GoPro Hero 8 Black on the horizon, and some fresh competition from the likes of DJI’s Osmo Action, keep an eye out on this page for big reductions on the Hero 5 Black and Hero 6 Black, which remain excellent action cameras with some features (like removable batteries and ProTune manual controls) that aren’t available on newer models like the Hero 7 Black Silver.
