The BBC has launched a dedicated Sport app for iPhone.
Following a busy summer in which the BBC won worldwide praise for its multimedia coverage of the Olympics – including a fine app – the company has just launched the BBC Sport app onto the App Store.
According to executive product manager Lucie McLean, “the new BBC Sport app builds on the success of London 2012 to give users an even easier way to get the content they love, whether it’s checking out how their team got on, following live text updates on the day’s sporting action or catching up with the latest news.”
In its current form the app provides quick links to the seven most popular sports in the UK – football, Formula 1, cricket, rugby union, rugby league, tennis and golf. These are reached through a permanently available menu button at the top right of the screen.
Other highlights include the presence of live scores, results and fixtures tabs at the top of the relevant sections. There are also dedicated sections for tables, leagues and even transfer gossip in the case of football.
The presentation is all very clean and BBC-like, and will be familiar to anyone who’s used the BBC’s mobile website in the past. But what’s really exciting is the upcoming additions the BBC has planned for the Sport app.
Video will play a huge part in the next iteration of the app, which is said to be mere weeks away. This will include video highlights on demand, as well as live footage for certain events.
Android owners needn’t be too envious – an Android version of the BBC Sport app is said to be mere weeks away. The staggered release is intended to offset any major issues with what will inevitably be a hugely popular app.
BBC Sport is available now for iPhone and iPod touch, and it’s free to download. There’s no news yet of an iPad-specific version, but of course the iPhone version will work on the tablet.
