BBC iPlayer Wii Updated

Boasts a more streamlined, easier to use interface.

It was fairly indicative of the size of the Wii’s user base that the BBC tweaked the iPlayer to work properly via its Internet Channel. Yet, at the time, it was rather basic since, as Anthony Rose on the BBC Internet Blog puts it, it was a “keep it simple, get it out fast” solution. Now, however, the BBC has decided to take things a little further, creating a custom website interface.

The new and optimised interface, called the ‘Bigscreen’ iPlayer, is a slightly simplified and much upscaled re-skin of the iPlayer site we all know and love. Of course it should now be significantly easier to navigate using a Wiimote, which is the important thing. The only real downside is that because of the Wii’s hardware and software limitations, the quality isn’t exactly great.

There’s also some more news about the iPlayer being enabled for the PS3. To quote verbatim: “We’re also working on bringing BBC iPlayer to Sony PS3, but we’re not quite there yet as the PS3 uses a slightly older version of Flash which doesn’t support some of the features used in our media player, and the very promising Flash 9 update now available on PS3 has some compatibility issues. Our Flash developers are working on it – stay tuned for updates“.
