Visceral Games has shown off a lengthy look at the Battlefield: Hardline single player campaign.
Speaking during the EA GamesCom press conference, Visceral Games’ Steve Patoutsis stated that Hardline is “setting itself apart from other Battlefield games.”
The single player campaign aims to “change up the traditional linear Battlefield single player” thanks to its cops and robbers style episodic nature.
Hardline follows protagonist Nick Medusa and his friend Marcus “Boomer” Boom in a quest for revenge across the US.
Following a brief encounter with a reward money/revenge quest motivated hick, Nick and Boomer find themselves trapped in a locked cell in an underground silo.
Boomer manages to break them out, but both are still in handcuffs and need to escape.
From what we’ve seen so far, the Battlefield: Hardline single player campaign is distinct from other series’ entries, mostly in terms of pacing. The section we saw relied on stealth tactics and non-lethal force to get out of the silo.
“You can get through a lot of the game by non-lethal means. It’s up to you to choose how you want to play”, added Patoutsis.
You’ll be able to utilise stealth tactics to isolate your enemies and that will introduce a lot more gameplay variety to Hardline. That’s probably most likely down to Visceral Games taking over the Hardline story.
Nick uses his handcuffs to render a guard useless by strangling him from behind and later uses a taser to take down guards without bullets.
There’s also a new weapon called the scanner. We think we’ll be using it a lot as it can be used to scan the area – highlighting targets, enemies, friends, points of interest and more.
You’ll also be able to make use of the new Freeze feature. By tackling enemies in the right way you can hold them at gunpoint. From there you can put them on the floor bound and gagged so they don’t cause you more problems.
Visceral Games of course highlighted that the Hardline single player is still as explosive and brutal and loud as other Battlefield titles if you want it to be.
As for multiplayer, EA Games announced two new game modes for Hardline – Hotwire and Rescue.
Hotwire will see you participate in high-speed car chases, while Rescue goes all Rainbow 6: Siege on us, pitting teams of four criminals against a squad of four cops to secure a hostage.
Patoutsis added that Visceral is aiming for “Innovation, depth and stability” with Battlefield: Hardline.
