Barclays to offer Apple Pay UK support “imminently”

UK banking giant Barclays is expecting to roll out support for Apple Pay “imminently,” according to reports on Friday.

MacRumours has obtained information that a “high-level executive” at the firm anticipates a quick show of support for the contactless payment service when it finally arrives in the UK.

However, with the service expected to launch early next week, it remains unclear whether Barclays will be part of the first wave of banks offering Apple Pay through the iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple is yet to confirm the exact launch date, but leaked training documents have suggested the contactless, NFC-based platform will go live on Tuesday July 14.

The firm wasn’t mentioned among the list of banks Apple listed as launch partners, but it appears negotiations with Barclays may have come to a successful conclusion.

Currently Apple lists HSBC, Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, First Direct, Halifax, M&S Bank, MBNA, NatWest, Nationwide, Santander, TSB and Ulster Bank as partners.

Having Barclays on board, a pioneer in mobile banking and pay-by-phone solutions in the UK, sure would be a boost to Apple and the consumers eager to give Apple Pay a spin.
