Avengers: Infinity War will be first movie shot entirely in IMAX

The final two Avengers films will make cinematic history, with the creators planning to shoot both movies using only IMAX cameras.

The two-part Avengers: Infinity War will be entirely filmed using a new, lightweight 2D digital camera, Variety reports.

While Captain America: Civil War will be the first film to use the new tech – for about 15 minutes of the film – cinema-goers will be able to witness all of the Avengers action in the larger 65mm format.

“The Russos (directors Anthony and Joe) are going to spend the next 15 months or so designing the making of the ‘Avengers’ films with these cameras in mind,” said the CEO of IMAX Entertainment Greg Foster.

They’re not looking at this a week before they start filming or only focusing on an important section of the film. This is something that’s never happened before.”

The cameras, which are produced through a partnership between IMAX and Arri, are more compact than previous iterations. The chips powering the cameras can be updated every few months so IMAX won’t have to continue building new cameras every time there’s a development.

The new 2D digital model isn’t intended to replace the 2D film IMAX cameras, but will be more of a complement, according to IMAX, which plans to be very selective over whom it allows to use its cameras.

The first Infinity War movie isn’t due out until May 4 2018, while the second will arrive a year later.
