Apple has announced some updates for its AirPods wireless earbuds at WWDC, including support for Dolby Atmos audio.
If you’re an owner of the second-gen AirPods or AirPod Pro wireless earbuds, you’re about to get a few updates that are set to improve the audio experience.
The first significant update coming to the AirPods is auto-switching. The feature is exactly as it sounds, meaning the listener can switch between linked iOS devices automatically so you can carry listening (or listen to something else) on another device. This is supported by the 2nd generation AirPods, AirPod Pros, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Solo Pro.
AirPods Pro Spatial Audio
More exciting is the announcement of Spatial audio for the AirPods Pro. Spatial Audio brings dynamic head-tracking for a ‘theatre-like’ experience to your home video watching. Using the accelerometer/gyroscope in iOS devices, along with directional audio filters and subtle adjustment of the frequencies each ear receives, Apple says that sounds can be placed “virtually anywhere” in the hemisphere to produce an immersive experience.
Spatial audio will support soundtracks in 5.1, 7.1 and object-based audio in Dolby Atmos.
