Asus Transformer Pad 300 UK Release Date Confirmed

Asus has officially confirmed when we’ll be able to get hold of the Asus Transformer Pad 300. The TF300T is a more affordable version of the Transformer Prime, and will be available from early May from Currys and PC World, and other retailers from June.

In a sensible retail partnership move, the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T will be available first from the DSG group. You’ll be able to order it online from early May, it’ll show up in high street PC World and Currys stores later that month, and should appear in other retailers in June. The initial model is blue, while white and red models will be released in June and July respectively.

The Asus Transformer Pad TF300T gains the quad-core processor seen in the Transformer Prime without gaining the £100 premium the Prime demands over the original Eee Pad Transformer. Selling for around £399 with keyboard dock, it’s competitively priced.

The tablet keeps the versatile tablet-netbook hybrid form that’s made the range such a smash, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – the latest version of Google’s smartphone/tablet OS. Nvidia’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor powers the tablet, it has a 10.1in 1,280 x 800 pixel screen, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. Selling at the same price as the 16GB iPad, but with the battery-extending (up to 15 hours) dock in tow, it’s a pretty attractive package.

What it misses out on are a true high-spec screen and feel. The Asus Tranformer Infinity due later this year offers 1,900 x 1,200 pixel resolution and a much brighter IPS panel. With a “bog-standard” IPS screen, the TF300T is no slouch but it’s a few notches below what’s not commonly available. Its body also takes a hit – backed by plastic, rather than the metal seen in the Transformer Prime.

If you don’t need a top-end feel in your tablet, this is probably the most versatile sub-£400 model you can get. We’ll be back with a full review soon.
