Asus Padfone Coming Early 2012 With Android 4.0

Remember the Padfone from Asus? Of course you do, it’s that

crazy idea of using a smartphone to power a tablet so you don’t need to buy two

fully-formed tablets.

Asus’ charismatic CEO, Jonney Shih unveiled the device at

Computex last May but since then the company has been pretty tight-lipped

regarding when (or indeed if) the Padfone would hit shelves.

At All Things D’s AsiaD conference this morning however Shih

finally revealed that the Padfone will arrive early next year and will come

pre-loaded with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

For those who have forgotten how the Padfone works, the 4.3in

smartphone will fit into the back of a 10in tablet shell with the processor,

RAM and memory of the smartphone powering the tablet.

Since the launch at the end of May, we have heard that Asus

has done a lot of tinkering with the Padfone design and what we could be seeing

in the new year is a completely new design.

With Asus already bringing the Transformer and Slider form

factors to the tablet market, it remains to be seen if the Padfone will have an

audience, but for those who don’t want to splash out on two expensive gadgets,

this could be the answer.

We expect to get our hands on the Padfone at CES in Las Vegas next January so

stay tuned all the details. For now, enjoy the overly cheery promo video from Asus which suggests the Padfone is the answer to all your problems.
