After such a long wait it's a bit of a let down to be honest.
It has been more than three months since Asus first bragged about its impending Lamborghini branded laptop. It’s been nearly two months since The Spode admitted to getting ‘excited’ when rubbing up against it (and a more dubious pink leather offering). So when late last week the company eventually said “this is what’s inside” I’d rather forgotten that we didn’t even know!?!
Is this heavily hyped and unbelievably strung out announcement finally leaving us all warm and fuzzy inside? Well, to be honest, not really. My reaction to reading the skinny on the ‘VXI Lamborghini Laptop’ – to give it its full name – made me go ‘Ok, cool’ rather than cartwheel around the office. Here’s why: At the heart is an Intel 2GHz T2500 CPU which is fine if not top of the line, there’s 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a good size 120GB hard drive, 15in display with decent 1400 x 1050 resolution and nVidia’s midrange GeForce Go 7400 graphics card with 256MB of onboard memory.
The usual connectivity options are there such as wireless a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and Asus makes a big deal out of its bundled Power4Gear software which it claims can boost battery life up to 25 per cent. The problem here is Power4Gear is a free piece of software available as a 750KB download from the company’s website, I have an 18 month old Asus laptop and it has it! Besides, when you’re talking about software assisted battery life in a ‘Lamborghini laptop’ release it is like walking into a Ferrari dealership and hearing the salesmen emphasise boot space. Now I’m not trying to knit pick here what we have on paper is fine but it is hardly pushing the performance envelope in the same way that the Italian super car designer has been with its motorcars for more than 40 years.
Aside from this, however, there is another problem associated with anything sporting the fabled charging bull: price. Put it on anything and the tag simply skyrockets and the Asus Lamborghini laptop is no exception. The VX1 will set punters bag just under two grand when it debuts at the end of this month and to my mind that is a lot of dough for a machine which – based on its features list – should really be sporting a respectable Volkswagen badge, not a Lambo one…
