Asahi Unveils Beer Serving Robot

Best. Invention. Ever.

It is well known around the TR offices that I enjoy the odd snifter of beer now and again between bench pressing cars and helping old ladies across the street so having spotted this I am tempted to ask: is this the greatest creation ever made by mankind?

Former editor of our former sister site Bit-tech, Wil Harris (that’s a lot of formers) creator of Channel Flip, discovered this remarkable godsend of a creation being demoed at Selfridges this week. The ‘Asahi Beer Robot’, lovingly dubbed ‘Mr Asahi’, is a combination of robotics and animatronics to create what is thought to be the first robot barman.

He’s just as good as the real thing took since a) he can open bottles of lager, b) he can pour pints of lager and c) he doesn’t ask you for any money afterwards. He even has a friendly line or two of banter.

Constructing Mr Asahi was no simple task however and it took eight engineers over 200 man hours using specialist labs across the globe. As you might expect from a robot who serves beer all day, he’s no lightweight either weighing in at almost one quarter of a tonne.

We’re certainly in agreement with Wil that this is the best robot ever made, but I’d be tempted to raise that to best invention ever made. After all, when did a wheel ever make karaoke seem like a good idea…?
