Ark: Survival Evolved gets Unreal Engine 4 modding support

Ark: Survival Evolved is showing no signs of becoming extinct as it hits 1 million sales and introduces a suite of new Unreal Engine 4 modding tools.

It has taken only 30 days for the dinosaur-survival game to reach 1 million sales on Steam’s Early Access Platform.

Riding on the success of its raptors, the game’s developer Studio Wildcard has announced that user-generated mods will be coming to the title in the near future.

Powered by Unreal Engine 4 editing tools, the studio is working directly with Epic Games so that players can access these tools for free.

Known as the “Ark Dev Kit”, the program features a simplified version of the Unreal Engine 4 Editor, compiled to streamline the process of creating maps and mods specifically for this title.

Content you create can immediately be uploaded to the Steam Workshop, allowing you to share creations with your friends and the wider community in a convenient and accessible fashion.

The developers had this to say in a recent update:

“We’ll have more tutorials in the upcoming days about how the specific features of Ark-level design are put together.”

“But for now, feel free to explore and modify ‘The Island’ map to poke around at how things work, including the stream sub-levels and the zone area spawners.”

“We encourage intrepid mod makers to help each other out here; the more the community can collaborate to build exciting new content, the better it’s going to be.”

If we end up being able to make a super Tyrannosaurus rex that can fly and shoot lasers, we’ll be more than satisfied. Personally, we can’t wait to see how such comprehensive modding tools are utilised by a community as passionate as this one.
