Apple’s Jony Ive promises new iPhone X features ‘in 12 months’

Apple’s Chief of Design has revealed that the iPhone X is going to get some new features within the next year.

In a wide-ranging interview with Trusted Reviews’ sister publication Wallpaper*, Jony Ive has waxed lyrical about Apple’s new iPhone X. The company’s flagship phones has seized tech headlines since it debuted back in September, and has quickly become one of the most talked-about gadgets of the year.

Importantly, Ive revealed that the iPhone X will be getting some new software perks over the next year, but remained coy about the exact details.

“What I think is remarkable about the iPhone X is that its functionality is so determined by software,” explains Ive. “And because of the fluid nature of the software, this product is going to change and evolve.”

He went on: “In 12 months’ time, this object will be able to do things that it can’t now. I think that is extraordinary. I think we will look back on it and see it as a very significant point in terms of the products we have been developing.”

Ive says that he’s “completely seduced” by coherence and simplicity of a product like the first iPod, but says he’s more intrigued by “an object that changes its function profoundly and evolves” over time: “That is rare. That didn’t happen 50 years ago.”

Aside from that titbit, most of Ive’s interview with Wallpaper* focused on the creation of the new Apple Park campus.

The new campus is now the official corporate headquarters of Apple Inc., and opened to employees back in April 2017. The campus is also home to the Steve Jobs Theatre, a brand new venue that was used to host the iPhone 8 and iPhone X launch event.

The site totals 175 acres and houses more than 12,000 employees in a circular, four-storey building that boasts approximately 2.8 million square feet of space.

“We managed to keep it to four storeys and you very much have a sense of space and a relationship with the built structure,” says Ive. “That is one of the reasons we have spent so much time on the stairs. There are so many connections between the floors. There are the light wells that go all the way down. You have the visual connections to the floors and connections by the stairs.”

Like the iPhone X, Ive promises that the Apple Park will be modified and improve over time: “Our building is very configurable and you can very quickly create large open spaces or you can configure lots of smaller private offices. The building will change and it will evolve.”

He added: “And I’m sure in 20 years’ time we will be designing and developing very different products, and just that alone will drive the campus to evolve and change.”
