Apple Watch 2 is nearly here, major design change incoming – report

Apple is planning to release a new Apple Watch sooner than we thought, if a new report is to be believed.

The Apple Watch 2 is set to arrive in July, at least according to leading analyst Brian White, of Drexel Hamilton.

White today issued a research note regarding the Apple Watch, based on meetings with a tech supply chain company in China.

MacRumors published the contents of this note, which read as follows:

Finally, we walked away with the sense that the Apple Watch refresh will not occur in September with the iPhone 7, but is more likely to occur within the next 2-3 months, and thus we believe an unveiling at WWDC in June makes sense.”

WWDC stands for the Worldwide Developers Conference, which is Apple’s annual software get-together, set to take place in June.

Apple doesn’t usually announce hardware at the event, although it has been known to in the past, as with the cylindrical Mac Pro.

White also suggested that a major design rework could be in the works for the Apple Watch 2:

“We believe Apple Watch 2 could be 20-40% thinner than the current Apple Watch.”

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t announced any specific details about an Apple Watch sequel, so take this report with due caution.

The original Apple Watch was announced on September 9, 2014, and eventually shipped on April 24, 2015, after significant delays.

It’s long been expected that Apple is planning a refresh for the series for 2016, although September has generally been held as the likeliest launch window for an Apple Watch 2 release.
