Apple is finally posting tweets on Twitter – well, sort of

Apple is finally breathing life into its long-dormant Twitter account, and has even posted a tweet.

With just days to go until the September 7 launch of the iPhone 7, Apple has awakened its official @apple Twitter account. The page, which has existed for over five years, has always been empty, with a completely blank profile, no images, and absolutely zero tweets.

Fast forward to Friday, September 2, and suddenly there’s an Apple logo for the profile image. Even more excitingly, Apple is using its iPhone 7 event teaser as the header image, which means we’ll definitely see iPhone 7-related goodness from the account.

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t sent a tweet yet; well, not a proper one. The company has launched a paid-for campaign, which lets some users see a promoted-only tweet that advertises the iPhone 7 launch event. However, you can’t actually see this post on the @apple profile due to the nature of promo-only tweets.

Apple has a number of active accounts on Twitter already, using the social media platform to offer support and information for services like the App Store, iTunes, and Apple Music. But today’s promotion-only tweet marks what appears to be the first public interaction from Apple’s official corporate Twitter page. Huzzah!

The iPhone 7 is set to be announced at an event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on September 7. The phone is reportedly going to offer minimal upgrades over last year’s model, with rumoured changes including the removal of the headphone jack, a new ‘Space Black’ colour option, and less prominent antenna banding. There’s also said to be one iPhone 7 configuration that will feature a dual-lens camera, but this has not yet been confirmed by Apple.
