Apple TV Plus guide: price, exclusive shows, devices and review

Apple TV Plus is the Cupertino tech giant’s foray into the video streaming market, and this guide will provide all the info you need to about the service.

It’s been 18 months since Apple TV Plus went online and it has carved out an identity as a streaming service of high quality shows.  Apple’s approach has been a novel taking on the established services of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus and Now TV in the UK. Rather than buy existing libraries to pad out their selection, they’ve invested in original content, a practice we wholeheartedly support.

How much does Apple TV Plus cost?

Apple TV plus costs £4.99 a month after the seven day free trial has elapsed.

That’s cheaper than Netflix, Amazon and Disney Plus. To sweeten the deal, Apple offered a year free for anyone who purchases a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod Touch from September 10, 2019 onwards. Purchases will only three months after device activation to claim the offer. If you were one of the early adopters, your free trial should have been extended to early 2021.

If you’re a university student, you can also get a year’s free alongside a reduced subscription fee for Apple Music.

How to watch Apple TV Plus

The Apple TV app is available on LG, Roku, Samsung and Sony TVs. Vizio TV owners in the US can access it through AirPlay 2. Head over here to check for specific models from each supported brand.

If you don’t have one of the compatible brands or models, the app can be accessed the app by purchasing the old Apple TV 4K box or new Apple TV 4K, Amazon Fire TV Stick or a Roku streaming player with 4K HDR support.

Once downloaded and signed in, there are three different tabs at the top: ‘Watch Now’, ‘TV+’ and ‘Library’. The ‘TV+’ tab is where you’ll find content

Shows can be viewed online or offline and there is no download limit. An Apple TV Plus sub includes access for six other family members thanks to Family Sharing. Other users will need their own Apple ID to get access to it. Anything you watch is available across all Apple devices, so playback can be resumed across iOS devices, Apple TV 4K box and Mac OS.

What series and movies are on Apple TV Plus?

The library of content has steadily grown since its launch. While it may not have a library as encompassing as Netflix or Prime Video, bear in mind that Apple only trades in original content – at least for the time being – it’s expected that older licensed content and sports events are heading to the service the beef up its output.

Here are the series and movies to keep an eye on in 2021.

Foundation

Ted Lasso

Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry
