Apple TV software refresh launching September 18?

Apple failed to mention anything of an Apple TV refresh at last night’s iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C launch, but it’s tipped to be on the cards for next week.

According to “people familiar with the company’s plans”, the Apple TV software will be getting a software overhaul the same day as the iOS 7 release date.

One of the major new software features expected to be part of the Apple TV update is an AirPlay revamp.

Apple TV users could soon be able to play all their purchased content on any Apple TV device, regardless of whether they own it or not.

The content could be accessed directly from the cloud and streamed via Apple TV without having to download it to an iPhone or iPad first, as is required with the current system.

This would mean the Apple TV would become a little more like the newly announced Google Chromecast dongle.

The sources speaking to AllThingsD didn’t mention any other potential features of the new Apple TV software, and seeing as Tim Cook and co failed to mention the set top box, we’ll have to see if the update materialises next week.

iOS 7 Features
The Apple TV update is tipped to arrive the same day as iOS 7, the complete mobile operating system overhaul Apple unveiled during WWDC 2013.

Packed with a host of new features, iOS 7 puts a new focus onto multitasking capabilities. Doing away with heavy skeuomorphic designs, Apple has introduced a new pastel colour scheme and a cleaner finish.

There’s a new Control Centre and the Notifications tab has been updated to offer increased functionality for the user. All the native Apple apps have had the iOS 7 makeover too.

iOS 7 will be released on September 18 for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad mini and 5th generation iPod Touch.
