Apple to target Snapchat with new social video app in 2017?

Apple is reportedly developing a new video app for iOS that would enable users to annotate clips and share them with friends.

Bloomberg reports Apple is making a standalone app that is designed for use with one hand and will allow users to shoot, edit, annotate and upload videos in under a minute.

One prototype version of the app, planned for a 2017 launch, features a square frame just like Instagram.

“The goal behind the project’s development is to offer simple video editing with tools that appeal to the generation of users growing up with Snapchat and Instagram, said the people,”
writes Bloomberg’s well-connected Mark Gurman.

The sources say the intent is for videos to also be shared with contacts or on existing social networks, as part of a much deeper integration of social networks into iOS.

It’s unclear from the report whether Apple is creating its own Snapchat-like app, or is merely assisting with the means of sharing to popular social networks.

Apple is already adding a greater youthful-focus to iOS 10 with the new Messaging app set to allow users to add balloons, fireworks and confetti to images shared through the app.

The app is being developed by the makers of Final Cut Pro, which is a little bit like asking Heston Blumenthal to peel the veg, but that’s none of our business.

As well as the Snapchat-a-like functionality, Apple is also seeking to expand social integration that would make it easier to share with their contacts throughout iOS as an extension of the “proactive assistance” functionality.

However, the team working on the changes must to get the changes approved by the Privacy team at Cupertino, so they may never see the light of day,
