As part of an ongoing effort to increase energy efficiency, Apple has announced that it will power all its Singapore operations using solar energy.
As Reuters reports, the company also confirmed it will be opening its first retail store in the city-state after previously relying on third-party retailers.
Singapore’s largest clean energy provider, Sunseap Group, will provide solar power to all of Apple’s operations in the region.
This includes the large corporate campus, home to 2,500 staff, and the forthcoming retail store, both of which will be powered by solar panels installed on the rooftops of 800 buildings.
The solar panels will generate 50 megawatts of solar energy and will be installed on both public-owned buildings and Apple’s own properties. 33 megawatts of that power will go to Apple.

The location and opening date of the new store is yet to be confirmed, but as 9 to 5 Mac previously reported, it looks likely to be built in an upmarket retail area on Orchard Road.
Apple will become the first company in Singapore to run entirely on sustainable energy, providing a big boost to Sunseap’s solar project.
The firm has made big efforts to increase its energy efficiency in recent years, previously announcing that 100% of its US operations, and 87% of worldwide operations, are powered with clean energy.
Apple also plans to build more than 200 megawatts of solar projects in China, in an effort to help its suppliers in the country become carbon neutral.
