If the latest reports emerging from China are to be believed, then Apple is currently testing a 4.9-inch display for the iPhone 6.
The fact that Apple is testing larger-screened devices has been well established by some reputable news sources over the past year or so. Back in September, for example, the WSJ reported that Apple was testing devices with a range of screens between 4.8 and 6-inches in size.
More recently there have been reports emanating from Japan that the iPhone 6 will feature a 5-inch display.
This latest report from Chinese website C Technology (which accurately predicted a number of features of the latest iPhone launch) claims that both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C will be superseded by larger models next year. The iPhone 6 will apparently sport a 4.9-inch display, in keeping with those earlier rumours, while the next mid-range iPhone will get an unspecified size boost.
Both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C feature the same 4-inch display that was introduced with last year’s iPhone 5. These were only marginally larger (longer, in fact) than all of the previous iPhone screens, which had been a squat 3.5-inches up to that point.
Any move to a 5-inch device (or thereabouts) would be a considerable jump for Apple. It would, we suspect, necessitate a completely new iPhone design with much slimmer bezels and an even thinner body if it’s to retain its precious one-handed usability.
